The first installment of Cities: Skylines was released eleven years ago – and now the franchise is celebrating its anniversary.
It’s hard to believe how quickly time flies, yet it’s true: Cities: Skylines was released almost exactly eleven years ago. The city-building management game from developer Colossal Order defined the modern city-building simulation genre, as no other game of its kind has been able to replicate the success of the “SimCity” games. While the sequel, Skylines 2, released in 2023, didn’t quite reach the same heights as the first installment, Paradox Interactive is nevertheless celebrating the franchise’s anniversary with new content.
This content will be released throughout March for both games. It includes, among other things, Content Creator Packs, radio stations, free updates, and a new expansion. The celebrations will kick off with a free weekend for Cities: Skylines, running from March 5th to 9th. On March 10th, a new expansion called “Race Day” will be released, allowing players to transform their streets into exciting race, run, and bike tracks – complete with spectators! That same day will also see the release of other free and paid content, including Content Creator Packs and a new radio station. A new patch will also add roadside fences and a new work information view.
Starting March 18th, the sequel, Cities: Skylines 2, will join the festivities, receiving two new Creator Packs on that day: “Office Evolution” and “City Stations.” Additionally, two new radio stations, “Smooth Vibes FM” and “Skyrail Radio,” will be added to the game. A special anniversary patch will then introduce the signature “Iceflake Arena” building into the game and improve the zone layout, along with other new features and bug fixes.
