Santa Monica Studio had two surprises in store for God of War fans at yesterday’s State of Play, leaving us ecstatic!
The 20th anniversary of God of War is almost over, and we didn’t expect Santa Monica Studio to announce anything new about the franchise. But here we are, with two announcements, both of which came as a big surprise. However, the news is all the more welcome. But let’s start at the beginning. Yesterday, another State of Play was broadcast, Sony’s presentation series in which they regularly share news about titles – both their own and external ones.
As announced in advance, the focus was on indie and third-party titles. However, there were also supposed to be a few updates on games from PlayStation Studios. What exactly? We didn’t know beforehand. So while there was exactly that, including new trailers for Pragmata with gameplay demo and Resident Evil 9 Requiem, it was the finale that surprised us the most. Suddenly, TC Carson, the “OG” voice actor for Kratos, appeared in front of the camera. And with his friendly manner, he announced some damn good news.
Trilogy remake
The initial announcement was quite a surprise, without us really seeing much of what to expect. We only saw the numbers one, two, and three, each with the iconic “God of War” omega. At the end of the short teaser came the revelation that fans have been waiting for years: the original trilogy is getting a remake. Carson said outright that the remake is still in its early stages, but that they are very excited to show more in due course. We’re already looking forward to it!
The second announcement was a shadow drop of a new God of War title, which is different from what we’re used to. Sons of Sparta is a 2D action platformer with a pixel art look, now available on PlayStation 5. It was developed by Mega Cat Studios, which has worked on many well-known games. In Sons of Sparta, we follow Kratos through his tough youth as a Spartan before he ascended to godhood. The story, which deals primarily with duty, honor, and brotherhood, was written by the team behind the newer God of War games. The standard edition is available on the PlayStation Store for $29.99.
